What types of incontinence are there and what are their causes?

Problems with bowel and bladder function and control are common, specifically among the elderly. There are 2 types of incontinence:


Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence means losing control of when urine leaves the bladder. This can range from minor leaking to a complete loss of control.


Fecal incontinence

Fecal incontinence is the inability to control stool (feces) from leaving the bowel, ranging from stool leaking when passing gas to a complete loss of control.

There are many causes of incontinence, for instance:

  • Certain foods, drinks or medications

  • Aging

  • Certain diseases

  • Constipation

  • Pregnancy
